In today’s As We Eat episode, Leigh and Kim explore how the realms of food and military intersect, both in times of war and in times of peace. From ration cards on the homefront to ceremonial cauldrons wielded by the Janissary Corps in the Ottoman Empire, the power of food affects how we grow, prepare, eat, and organize our military.
I remember ration cards and mom talking about sugar, flour and coffee. I also don’t remember her being too concerned as she had three little kids…cards must have been given by number of people in family? And we also always had a grease jar…mom used the fat for frying potatoes, eggs etc etc. I had a dear friend who was in his 90’s and he gave me his mothers “grease jar”. Leigh, remind me to show it to you. It has to be well over 1O0 yrs old (I will put your name on it)
Dad was a cook in the Civilian Conservation Camps during this time. Wish we’d asked more questions…wonder what they cooked?
I also remember dad repairing tires with the shortage of rubber.

Fascinating histories! Another book about Wartime food rationing in the UK that I found interesting is The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan.
