This was a great episode! I enjoyed learning about the history of cookbooks; it’s something that I had never really considered before. I especially loved the discussion around how sometimes cookbooks represent the type of cook/eater that we want to be, and how they can be almost aspirational. Looking forward to future cookbook-focused podcasts!

Thanks Kiki! It’s interesting to look through our cookbook libraries to get an insight into what kind of people we are or aspire to me. As I mentioned, this is Leigh, on the podcast my collection is filled with vintage cookbooks and community cookbooks. Which is so inline with my love of food history and my respect for the power of community. What does your cookbook library say about you?

My cookbook collection says I’m a very eclectic eater! I have a lot of cookbooks based on seasonal, plant-based cooking and those are probably the ones I use the most due to my issues with dairy. But I also have cookbooks based on simple, everyday meals and many for baking desserts from back when I baked way more than I cooked. There are some aspirational ones in there, too; a book dedicated to homemade bread comes to mind! Interestingly, we only have one cookbook related to Spanish cuisine (we live in Madrid and my partner is Spanish). For any type of Spanish cooking we usually use family recipes.

It’s so easy to go down cookbook research rabbit holes!

I personally think they are the best rabbit holes to go down! 😁

Thank you, Jolene. This was so much fun to research and write. I think we’re going to devote next seasons episodes solely on the cookbook.
