Looking Back… and Forward
January is a month of resolutions - often broken before the month is up; making promises of becoming a “new” someone - why, you’re perfect that way you are; or going “cold turkey” - not us, we’ll just be moderating to continue to enjoy those things we enjoy.
This month’s edition of the AS WE EAT JOURNAL | REFLECT will take you on a journey through our archives. We’re reflecting on topics we found particularly impactful, or projects that may not have grown the feet we had hoped, recipes we found thought provoking, or the odd bits of food history that we found interesting or inspiring.
Speaking of reflection, you’ve surely noticed the changes that we’ve been making with the essays, recipes, and notes in the Journal. We love creating for the As We Eat community in hopes that those creations educate, enlighten, and entertain you. We also both understand that there are requests for monetary patronage from nearly every quarter, and we don’t want you to have to pick and choose which creative endeavors you support, so we’d like to propose a new patron option to “tip” according to the value that AS WE EAT brings to you.
Whether it’s a one time gift or a monthly or yearly subscription, we appreciate your support of our work. And a quick reminder of the subscription perks available to our cherished culinary community:
All Subscribers: As part of our promise to dish up delectable content to tantalize your taste buds, all our subscribers will enjoy access to all sections of the Journal, allowing you to dive deep into the sumptuous treasure trove of articles, stories, and knowledge.
Patron Subscribers: We've prepared some special perks just for our monthly and yearly subscribers. You'll gain access to beautifully crafted, printable illustrated recipe cards from The Heritage Recipe Project, providing you with a tasty connection to our culinary heritage. Additionally, you'll be entitled to exclusive discounts in our upcoming As We Eat Marketplace, making exploring unique culinary finds easier. Also, you will be able to access our archived materials made specifically for you!
Thank you for joining us on this journey. Enjoy REFLECTing on recipes and reads and return in February for our LOVE issue!
Speaking of…, if you are looking for a unique gift for your favorite foodie, consider delivering some joy with a gift subscription to AS WE EAT.
Sincerely,
Here’s What’s In Store
January 4, 2024 - Brewing a Cup of Coffee
Leigh reflects on the inaugural article of a newly contrived column called Food In Art. Sadly, only three articles were published to Food In Art. Is it a column destined to remain remanded or should it be revived?
January 11, 2024 - Tiny Bubbles
Kim reviews some of the near-mythological origins of a favorite celebratory and effervescent beverage - champagne! Once viewed as a failure of fermentation and wine-making, champagne is one of France’s finest exports and is coveted all over the world.
January 18, 2024 - Jane’s Very Good Baking Powder Biscuits
Once upon a time shared recipes were written on paper. By hand. If the sharer was a secretary - yes, they were called that in those days - it may have been typed! Each shared recipe reveals so much about its creator simply in the way it was shared. Leigh reflects on a recipe from her recipe box collection that was shared on a very unique piece of paper.
January 25, 2024 - Dumplings for Prosperity
There are many foods that people around the world will eat for luck and good health, but dumplings shaped like tiny gold ingots are a must-have in many Lunar New Year celebrations as a way to invite prosperity. As we prepare our tables for the Year of the Dragon, let’s revisit Kim’s interview with her friend Sylvia about her family’s dumpling traditions.
