Journal Overview/Letter from the Editor
April showers bring May flowers. This was a lesson lovingly pressed onto us through a variety of school crafts, including delicate tissue paper blossoms pressed onto paper with glue-sticky fingers or cheerful rainbow-hued blossoms painstakingly cut from scraps of construction paper.
Flowers signify celebrations, help love to blossom and grow, and sometimes bring a moment of beauty to the ceremony of death. For Victorians, flowers had a codified language based on color, scent, and seasonality and always had a place on a well-appointed dining table. For us modern folks, we may have done away with posies and boutonnieres, but flowers do much more than decorate our tables - they feature prominently in our dishes and our drinks.
This edition of the AS WE EAT JOURNAL is dedicated to the culinary life of flowers, and we are digging in the dirt for the delightful seeds of our explorations into floral-flavored foods like teas, honey, and more.
Speaking of flowers, this journal is our gift to the AS WE EAT community to educate, enlighten, and entertain you. We understand that there are constant requests for monetary patronage from nearly every quarter, so we have a new patron option to offer us a “tip” according to the value that AS WE EAT brings to you.
