Letter from the Editors
This edition of the AS WE EAT JOURNAL reflects how our appetites shift with the season. Whether it’s the change in the North American weather or because this season is typically devoted to gathering family and friends, we want extra comfort in our daily lives, especially in our meals.
The theme of this second edition of the reimagined As We Eat Journal is COMFORT, and we’ve had a great deal of fun exploring stories, history, and technologies that bring us closer to the foods we find comforting.
For National Deviled Eggs Day, check out our Deviled Egg Dish-Covery to trace how Ancient Roman stuffed eggs came to be associated with the “fiery spices of the Devil” in the 18th Century.
Recipe Box Roulette unveils the story of Lois' Baked Cheese Sandwiches and dives into grilled cheese’s rich, gooey history. Mmmmmmm!
From there, Table Talk visits the history of the kitchen wonder appliance - the Crock-Pot along with a simple but special Stroganoff recipe that helped to warm Kim & Hector’s first apartment.
And then, The Heritage Recipe Project visits the recipe for Mermere's Baked Beans, and a cherished kitchen heirloom inherited from the recipe contributor’s grandmother.
And a reminder of the perks available to our cherished culinary community:
