The winter holidays are times for good cheer and a good meal, but a heartfelt gift from the heart can warm you from the inside just like a hearty soup. Here is a list of suggestions for gifts that we hope will spark some joy this season.
Close to Our Hearts
My first suggestion is, of course, a subscription to the As We Eat Journal. Our Tuesday posts are always free, but there is lots of juicy content at the next level of subscription. Already a subscriber? Give one or many!
Love Leigh’s food illustrations and artwork? ME TOO! Supporting The Heritage Cookbook Project with a subscription helps keep Leigh in watercolors. And don’t forget about the incredible, illustrated 2023 Pie Calendar featuring 12 illustrated recipes pulled from Leigh’s impressive vintage recipe box collection.
Books That Inspired Us
Two of our favorite episodes this year were inspired by From Betty Crocker to Feminist Food Studies: Critical Perspectives on Women and Food and All Stirred Up: Suffrage Cookbooks, Food, and the Battle for Women's Right to Vote.
We were also deeply inspired by the lives and works of two amazing Black food pioneers - Edna Lewis and Leah Chase. Their books are not only full of timeless recipes but also thoughtful meditations on food and what it means to cook for and feed others in a community.

Cooking the Podcast
We love cookbooks so much that the new season of As We Eat (debuting on February 14, 2023) will explore how cookbooks, both ancient and modern, have impacted how we think about, talk about, and interact with the foods that we eat. Stay tuned for interviews with authors, discussion about cookbooks as literature, insight into how cookbooks define (and exclude) communities, and more.
In the meantime, here are recommendations to help whet your appetite!
Mastering the Art of French Cooking, two-volume set
Watermelon and Red Birds: A Cookbook for Juneteenth and Black Celebrations
The Essential Jewish Baking Cookbook: 50 Traditional Recipes for Every Occasion
Art of the Pie: A Practical Guide to Homemade Crusts, Fillings, and Life
