Marie's Background & Marriage Plot

Born into aristocratic privilege, Marie Fortenay Capella's lineage boasted connections to notable figures of French nobility, yet her life took an unexpected turn following the loss of her parents.

Despite her prestigious pedigree, Marie found herself relegated to the status of a "poor relation," lacking the matrimonial prospects befitting her social standing.

Enter Charles Lafarge, a financially troubled iron master, who, with the help of a marriage broker and Marie’s Uncle, orchestrated a union with Marie, promising wealth and stability.

Despite initial misgivings, Marie acquiesced to the marriage, only to find herself disillusioned by Charles's brutish behavior and the dilapidated state of their new home, Le Glandier.

Le Glandier, the estate that was supposed to be Marie’s salvation but proved to be much more sinister.

The Alleged Poisoning, Forensic Science, and the Aftermath

Suspicions, conflicting testimonies, primitive forensic procedures, a pioneering chemist along with fervent protests of innocence and alternative theories implicating others round out our story.
