A Substack Thanksgiving
Food, Fetes, and Fun From Some of our Favorite Food & Drink Writers
We’ve gathered together some of our favorite food & drink writers to share some of their traditions, suggestions, and strategies at our virtual Thanksgiving table. Have a seat and enjoy this not too traditional holiday event.
Pre-Func
Jolene Handy from Time Travel Kitchen will take you on trips you didn’t think possible from your kitchen. As she serves her Swellegant Cocktail Party, she transports you to a neighborhood cocktail party on Long Island in the 1960’s and shares some iconic mid-century appetizers. We love the nostalgia that this pre-dinner combination brings to Thanksgiving 2023.
The Main Event
If you haven’t invited Pat Willard to your table, you need to. Her wit and knowledge of how America eats make her one of our favorite table fellows. If you’re still on the fence about what to serve as the main protein for Thanksgiving, Pat has some not-so-traditional suggestions. Turkey Butts, anyone?
To Accompany You
Traditions generally abound during the holidays. And we couldn’t think of anyone better to give voice to this than Amie McGraham of Cook & Tell. The thoughtful revival of her mother’s foodletter, Cook & Tell, provides some poignant jumping off points for Amie along her fledgling - her words not mine - culinary journey. But this Thanksgiving, it’s the “Classics” that will grace her table.
And speaking of tradition, Kim Baker from our very own As We Eat shares a dish that has become a tradition on her Thanksgiving table. Sometimes traditions are passed down through the generations and sometimes we desire, nay need to create something new. This tangy dish is a result of the latter.
A Sweet Symphony
Kate McDermott is one of the most genuine, compassionate, and enthusiastic people that you could ever invite to your table. She’s also the queen of pie! Always a good friend to have. And just in case you’re wavering about the very traditional pumpkin pie, Kate has a suggestion for a spiced pie and accompanying drink that you really should try.
Cheers to You and Yours
Need to know anything about wine? Gus is your guy. Truth be told, we’re a little jealous of his wine cellar and the fact that he can have a glass of wine before 10:00 AM. It is work after all. Jealousy aside, Gus has some really great strategies for choosing the right wines to set on the table. PS, thanks for the permission to double-fist during Thanksgiving 😉
We hope that you enjoyed the first annual Substack Thanksgiving and our cadre of culinary cohorts, their stories, and recipes. We wish you and yours the best of holiday seasons. May they be filled with joy, love, and the making of really delicious memories.
What will you be serving this Thanksgiving? A tradition dish, a not-so-traditional dish, or maybe a bowl of mac n’ cheese. Let us know.
