A look into the future
what to look forward to with As We Eat in 2023 + a chance to win a cookbook
We are so excited for all of the things that we have in store for you! So, we thought we would give you glimpse into the future. As we’ve mentioned previously, the podcast topic for 2023 is cookbooks. We’ll be delving into these culinary treasures discussing how they have shaped our perspectives on food and eating.
We’re dedicating two episodes to each cookbook. In the first episode, we’ll introduce the cookbook discussing the author’s intent, take a look at the context in which it was conceived, and discuss its far reaching impacts. In the second episode, we’ll discuss a specific recipe that one of us has created from the cookbook. We’ll share our experience with the recipe, discuss specific ingredients, and explore any thoughts we had while creating it.
Make sure to read all the way to the end and then download our little matching game for a chance to win one of our favorite cookbooks!
Here’s what 2023 will look like at As We Eat
February
Honoring Seasonality
With the advent of the industrial revolution, industrialized nations have moved very far away from honoring seasonality of foods as well as local and regional ingredients. This month, As We Eat will take a look at seasonality and sourcing and eating local. Our season opener podcast will introduce a cookbook that was written with seasonality, sourcing local, and celebrating community at its roots. Articles in the Journal will discuss and develop this concept further.
March
Self-respect and empowerment
As We Eat starts celebrating Women’s History Month by diving into a cookbook collaboration that would help to change the course of women’s rights. The book is an homage to the pride these women took in homemaking as well as their desire to be recognized as important contributors to their communities and country. We’ll take a deeper look into the concept of self-respect and empowerment through food in the Journal Articles.
April
Technique
April is all about technique because if you have the techniques down, the world is your oyster. We think we’ve chosen a cookbook that personifies this concept exceptionally well. In the podcast, we’ll be exploring how the author not only introduced North America to her favorite cuisine, but also the importance of understanding the techniques in the recipes. Not for the sake of knowing the technique, but to arm you with the tools of creativity in the kitchen. The Journal will go deeper into the concept of techniques’ abilities to foster flexibility and acceptance.
May
Breaking Stereotypes
The word itself isn’t negative, it simply means a simplification or standardization of a concept, however, in practice stereotyping can be destructive, mean-spirited, and counterproductive. This month, we’ve chosen a cookbook that was written to inform, educate, and break some very ingrained stereotypes. Join us in the Journal as we take a look at how these stereotypes have limited our access to varied voices.
June
Community & Celebration
Two years ago the United States instituted its 12th federal holiday. At its core is the celebration of the freedom granted to enslaved black people in the state of Texas two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Looking deeper, this is a celebration of community, of the freedom to celebrate the music, dance, history, culture, and food of a community within that community. On the podcast, we’ll open a beautiful literary piece named the first cookbook to focus on Juneteenth and explore the feast of food and freedom. The Journal articles will center around the celebration of communities and their foods.
July
Giving Voice
Giving voice, using our voice, and listening are all paramount to community building. And July is the month that As We Eat will be investigating how sharing recipes has the ability to bring many unheard voices to the forefront. We’re excited to dive into a forgotten piece of literature that took an intrepid journalist 12 years to compile. Twelve years of travel, of listening, of documenting, and of sharing. The art of sharing recipes will be the focus of our Journal articles this month.
August
Authenticity and Accuracy
Buckle your seat belts! In August we’re going to get cerebral. We’ll be talking about the concepts of authenticity and accuracy as they relate to food. We’re not saying we have all of the answers, but we’ll be discussing these concepts through a cookbook that reclaims a lost cuisine and culinary heritage. Join us in August on Substack where we’ll be moderating chats to talk about this often polarizing but important topic.
September
Melting Pot
Another prickly subject, the melting pot. On the podcast, we’ll talk about this concept by diving into a vintage cookbook whose main purpose was to promote integration and assimilation of newly arrived immigrants into the American midwest. Often viewed as a way to strip a culture of its culinary heritage, we want to investigate this concept a little further in the Journal.
October
Finding Joy in Cooking and Eating
Leave the notion that cooking is a chore behind and make sure to listen to this month’s episodes about a cookbook whose title speaks to a virtue that cooking can and should bring to each of us AND a cookbook that honors communal eating. We want to hear from you about this thought, so make sure to keep an eye out in the Facebook group for your opportunity to share. The articles in the Journal will be filled with joy!
November
Heart & Hand
As we move into the holidays, we have a super special month lined up. We’ll be immersing ourselves - and you - into a kitchen art that connects heart to hand. Our cookbook for this month teaches you how to roll with the flow and learn how to keep everything chilled, including yourself. And if that isn’t enough, we’ll be coming to you from a cottage on the peninsula with the author herself. It’ll be ins-pie-ring ;)
December

So exciting! I love cookbooks and have made myself promise to cook something from one of the cookbooks I already own BEFORE I buy another one! (I even did a cookbook challenge on my IG😅) Can’t wait to hear/read all about your cookbook stories throughout the year! Great theme! 👍
